MLB Draft |
Lead | ||
|
Joe Gardner was picked in the 3rd round. #94 to Cleveland. He was the first Big West player drafted, right before RHP Kelly from Riverside
went at #98 to St. Louis.

Here's what the News-Press had to say on Wednesday:
Infielder Matt Valaika leads the Santa Barbara Foresters, the defending National Baseball Congress champions, with a .346 batting average and 10 runs scored. He was drafted in the 20th round by the Cincinnati Reds, but it's looking more likely that he'll stay in town for his senior year. "I talked to him today, and he confirmed that he's coming back," Brontsema said. "Well, he's 99 percent sure, anyway. I'm still waiting for the 100 percent. Apparently, that would come on Aug. 17." That's the deadline that big-league clubs have to sign their drafted players. |

Sounds like the Reds didnt offer the schooling expense. Good news for SB!! Originally, I thought Valaika would return to finish school. The life of a
professional baseball player is good but not a glamourous life in the rookie league with the constant bus rides and in the middle of nowhere. I am sure Chris
talks to him regularly about minor league and missing the blue ocean and all.
As for Joyce, I do hope he stays eligible. I know Joyce was a good student (B+) in high school and hopefully he picks up the slack because SB really needs his arm next year. |

I think your information about his academic prowess has been greatly exaggerated.

From how he's been talked about as a pitcher, it doesn't really sound like he's going to stay until he graduates. Just make sure he isn't in
bad academic standing when he leaves so he doesn't kill baseball's APR.
Yeah - he should work as hard on his academics as his athletics, and it's not like he played a ton this past year - he really should have been getting academics out of the way. But, if he's expected to be drafted before graduation and he's not interested in his schooling - adjust for him. Who knows - an easy, broad-based course load might get him interested in something that he will do well in. If nothing else, it will keep him eligible. Most lower division classes are, to steal from a commercial, so easy a caveman can do it. Have him do GE's or something. Between easy courses and being required to be in athletic study hall, it shouldn't be a problem. |

Guys,
Take it easy on Joyce. Joyce might be struggling but he has his goals in order as he passed up real $$ to attend school. He was drafted in the 10th round by the Dodgers and would have gone much, much higher if teams thought he might sign. All teams knew Joyce has the right build and pitching repetoire but he let all teams know that he wanted to attend SB. He might be struggling right now but he is not all about the mighty dollar. These are the reasons why I was so angry that our administration and coaches screwed him last year and kept him from playing ball. |

He screwed himself, not taking enough core classes in high school to be eligible for NCAA sports ... UCSB just didn't catch it. The kid's gotta take
responsibility for himself.

bandsman, "Most lower division classes are, to steal from a commercial, so easy a caveman can do it. Have him do GE's or something." You
obviously weren't an engineering, math or sciences major.

If I am correct then the NCAA changed the number of core classes an incoming freshmen has to take to participate in baseball. Joyce as a student could not know this unless his high school counselor informs him, most unlikely, or his college coaches or college administrator advices him. |

Dakyne - started out physics, couldn't hack the upper division, and ended up with a BS in geology. Lower division classes were, for the most part, a piece
of cake, though I wouldn't know anything about engineering ones. Don't get me wrong - there are definately some lower division classes that are weed
out courses, but the vast majority are much easier than upper division - especially, oddly enough, the science GE ones. I dunno, maybe I'm just
remembering fondly the easy classes before they throw real work at you. My point was that if somebody needs an easy schedule - it can be arranged, very
easily.
And I hope above all else that Joyce figures it out. Freshman year is hard for some people just because they're getting used to something completely different from anything they've known previously. Hopefully that's the case and he can dust himself off as a sophomore and succeed. Ultimately, I hope the guy can accomplish his goals, because that's what a university is supposed to help with. If he wants to go another year and pick up a check - fine. If he wants to stay a full 4 years and get a degree - equally fine. |

The weeding our process in Engineering starts on your first class and doesn't end until your junior year, believe it or not. 2 out of 3 flunk out of
Engineering from the time they are freshmen by the time they graduate. I don't think the material is that much harder than Physics, but the grading curve
is pretty intense.
For me, an ECE major, electromagnetics junior year was a killer. 1/3 of the class flunked, the rest got C's, and I think only 1 student got an A on a mid-term. I think I got an F on the mid-term, and salvaged a C--and never looked back. Lots of students re-took it the next fall, which meant they had 4 Engineering courses in addition to an elective that quarter. I'm sure many re-flunked the class. E/M in sophomore physics was a breeze compared to that, so I will agree with you there.

Has there been any additional info in the News Press re: Valaika's status?

He played for the semi-pro Santa Barbara Foresters last night, so I'm guessing he's still a Gaucho.
