MLB Draft |
Lead | ||
|
Joe Gardner was picked in the 3rd round. #94 to Cleveland. He was the first Big West player drafted, right before RHP Kelly from Riverside
went at #98 to St. Louis.

Thanks for the update FBF. I hope the ML team dont sign too many of your entering freshmen this year, not that you need much more help. |

3 in the first three rounds (Hobgood #5, Skaggs in the comp round, Meyer the last pick in round 3). All will sign, oh well. A few more will
probably be snatched up today.

All will sign, oh well. Good chance that they will sign with the money and slot but not a given. Just look at the freshmen for UCLA. Everyone said how the Yankees were going to sign him but ended up in Westwood... Considering that Renken and both Ramirezs will be back next season, Fullerton is can only get better. What a scary thought. For SB, Gardner is gone for sure. I wonder if Gelinas will sign if he goes top 10 rounds. I guess many HCs will be sweating for about the next two months. |

Nobody else from UCSB (current team or recruits) has been drafted yet. It looks like Hollands could be coming back since he is a 3rd yr Soph so
he will still have leverage next year over MLB teams for his signing bonus as a 4th year JR.

Re: MLB Draft | #9 | ||

What, no barbs for Myers, too? It was our pitching that sucked, not our hitting or fielding. We were one of the best hitting teams in college baseball. But our
pitching totally let us down.
They totally underachieved. A real cluster-f**k-up of nearly the entire staff. Good pitchers went bad, or at least average. Everyone but Gardner. Maybe we just need a new pitching coach, not a new head coach. |

Maybe you are right. Myers is great on the recruiting, but actually coaching is another story.

Tough to see so many players drafted but not make the regionals.
Gardner (3rd round) Cleveland, Jr Cavan (16th) SF, Jr Valaika (20th) Cincinnati, Jr Hollands (24th) Minn, RS So Gump (26th) Phillies, SR Cummings (28th) Chi White Sox, SR Carlson (32nd) Cincinnati, Sr Forest Cannon (34th) Cincinnati, RS So Oliver (36th) LA Angels, Sr Other recruits: Gelinas (45th) Pirates Luvisi (49th) Arizona Ford wasnt drafted as expected. He could return but there is much talk that he could try as a free agent like other seniors and leave SB. I hope Valaika and Hollands return next season. As for Gelinas and Luvisi, come to SB. If Arizona offers a big sum to Luvisi then it could really hurt our 2010 team because he would be a great addition as a pitcher and a power hitter for us. That ends the 2009 draft and now they have until August 15, i think, to sign these players or lose their draft pick. |

Gelina, Luvisi will be on campus in the fall.
How about Valaika Cannon or Hollands? Any read? If they had not said they'd sign, suspect they may not have been drafted. |

Update | #14 | ||
|
Update:
Gardner (3rd round) Cleveland, Jr - Signed Cavan (16th) SF, Jr - Signed Valaika (20th) Cincinnati, Jr - Looks like will sign if Cincinnati offers schooling money Hollands (24th) Minn, RS So - ??? Gump (26th) Phillies, SR - Signed Cummings (28th) Chi White Sox, SR - Signed Carlson (32nd) Cincinnati, Sr - Signed Forest Cannon (34th) Cincinnati, RS So - Signed Oliver (36th) LA Angels, Sr - Signed Other recruits: Gelinas (45th) Pirates Luvisi (49th) Arizona All of the seniors have signed. As for non-seniors, Gardner, Cavan and Cannon have recently signed. As for potential returnees, Valaika most likely will sign if Cincinnati offers schooling money (thanks for the scoop FBF). That leaves Hollands who has a decent chance of returning as a 24th rounder. Our 2010 recruits, Gelinas and Luvisi, have not signed yet. Luvisi will probably come to campus. Arizona has a ton of draftees that requires a lot of signing bonuses and most likely wont give Luvisi enough to sway his decision. As for Gelinas, good thing the Pirates picked him. They are one of the cheaper baseball organization and usually wont go out of their way to pay excessive amount. Positive news since Gelinas is having a fantastic summer. He has pitched rougly 8.1 innings while striking out 18 batters so far. Other summer league news, Joyce is not as sharp as last year with the Foresters but kind of expected after sitting out a whole year. Hopefully he finds his 2008 form since the summer league is just 2 week old. |

Summer League Update | #16
|
As so many Gauchos sign with ML teams, what will our 2010 baseball team look like? The biggest question surrounding the program is how to replace the offense
that loses Carlson, Cummings, Gump, Oliver, DeAlba, Cook, Cavan and most likely Valaika. Cavan and Valaika are big losses since they are juniors but most
likely wont return. That said, our offense was good last season and I still think we should be okay as we add some jc players. Our young group of hitters
will also have to setup up including Luvisi, Palermo, Mahan and Vaccaro/Epperson.
As for our pitchers, the loss of Gardner, our Ace in 2009, will hurt but is expected. If Hollands returns then it will give our team a real boost. Our other potential starters are Chris Joyce, Kevin Gelinas and Jordan Luvisi. Joyce has the horrible year off due to some miscue. He is starting to regain his form as he just had his best outing of the summer against a good SLO team yesterday. 6 IP 3 hits 0 runs 3 walks 4 Ks. Then there is Gelinas who pitched another inning as a closer and recorded 3 more Ks. His numbers to date: 9.1 IP 4 hits 0 runs 5 walks 21 Ks. 21 Ks in 9.1 innings is really incredible. That comes out to striking out 21 out of 28 outs. WOW!!! Greg DAvis and Meaux are also trying to stay sharp but not doing too well. The only guy worth mentioning is Loredo, from San Jose CC, who is pitching well with a 2+ ERA. Joyce, Gelinas, Luvisi and Loredo would really give our team a lifeline from the horribly inconsistent staff we had last season. If Hollands returns then we will be that much more solid in the most important area in baseball, pitching staff. If Hollands returns, then we can even have Gelinas help as a closer. This team will be stronger than 2009. However, we still have to wait to see what happens with the draft. If Hollands, Gelinas and Luvisi sign then we will begin to feel the pain. |

Question for you, DS ... | #17
|
You say Valaika is going to sign, but supposedly he's told Brontsema that it's "99 percent" likely that he's going to return.
Do you have any inside info that no one else is privy to? Some South Korean pipeline to Gaucho baseball? If so, have you heard anything about Joyce's eligibility? Are you so sure he's going to be able to play for UCSB next year? |

Here are Valaika's comments in the News Press last weekend......
The Reds selected Valaika in the 20th round of last week's MLB Draft - the only second baseman among their 50 picks. But he rejected their contract offer last week. "They wouldn't pay for my schooling, and I want to finish that, obviously," Valaika said. "But we're still working on it. We'll see." His older brother, Chris, plays shortstop for the Reds' Triple-A team in Louisville, although he's been on the disabled list for the last month with a broken hand. Matt has sought his brother's advice, but he considers the situation to be pretty clear-cut. "I'm not trying to hold out just to get more money, signing bonus-wise," he said. "I'm just trying to get them to pay for school, and if they decide that they'll do it, I'll sign and get out of here. "They're going to send me to Billings, which is rookie ball, and it starts in a few days. So they probably want a decision soon." |

have you heard anything about Joyce's eligibility? Are you so sure he's going to be able to play for UCSB next year? NachoMan, I havent heard anything more about Joyce. Is there something going on with Joyce's eligibility? What I thought was that he had missed out on one core class and since he had a full year to take courses that that would be lifted. Now, Joyce being pissed about missing a year would be another story. Do you have any insight on Joyce? |

I hear from several people that he's not a good enough student (effort-wise, anyway) to keep himself eligible -- which is why I was asking if you of anyone
else had any inside info.
