Pontius quotes | #1 | ||||||||||||||
|
"It's going to be a tough game," United's Chris Pontius said. "We'll be playing in front of 30,000, and that won't be easy." The artificial surface doesn't bother the rookie. "I played on turf all through college [at UC Santa Barbara], so I have no problem," he said.

Forgot to report on Tino playing against the Galaxy last Saturday night. Two quality minutes at the end of regulation +4 added minutes. Coach threw the home
town boy a bone in garbage time.
I however cheered wildly and started my solo GAUCHOOOOO chant when he entered the game. Did not see "Tino's primos"!
I WAS THE THUNDER IN THE DOME!

An assist by pontius in the 87 minute.

It was considered an own goal so I don't think Pontius is officially getting the assist, but it was a great cross. I am pretty sure he made some enemies at Seattle. He was booed like crazy on his last throw in. |

I would have to agree, it was action packed for most of the 90 minutes and crowd was ridiculous. I would have to argue it's a tie b/w this match and the
DC's come from behind victory in stopage time against the Red Bulls.

Pontius on Nats becoming more realistic | #14
|
When I first broached the possibility of Pontius playing in the 2010 WC, it was admitedly a remote dream. However, given his continued good play, coupled by
the crap performances by the US recently, I can see Pontius getting called into a camp sooner rather than later.
I watched part of the NZ/South Africa match the other day. Man, poor Lochhead was bleeding from the ole noggin after he missed a header and hit a head instead. But when he got back onto the field with the white bandage on his head, I had no problem at all following him on the field. NZ looked horrible, though. I think my Saturday morning pickup team could have given them trouble. Compared to his comrades, Lochhead played decently. Almost all the goals they conceded originated on the other side from Lochhead. I am not giving them a whole lot of hope versus the 5th place team in Asia which will determine whether or not they qualify for the WC. And, yeah, UCSB got a mention during the match (actually our proper name was mentioned: University of California at Santa Barbara). __________________________________________________ http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZGIz9zSEKKc |

Pontius proving to be a finisher | #15
|
He has shown some ability to finish which is more than I can say for the national squad. Consider that about 80% of Landon Donovan's goals are from PKs.
From watching the Brazil match, are they playing with a lone forward upfront? What formation is US using as I don't see it producing many opportunities.
Very frustrating watching this team. They can barely hold possession.

I have the Brazil/US match sitting on the Tivo. I think I'll watch it later, although I have read that it was ugly for the US. I want the US to qualify
for the WC, but I don't mind seeing them struggle getting there... my primary wish is for Pontius to have a chance to make the WC roster and my secondary
wish is for a new coach which I think would be good for the program. I think Jurgen is available after being fired by Bayern Munich a couple months ago
After watching that NZ match, I'm thinking Pontius may offer the most hope for getting a Gaucho to South Africa. Eek. Oh, and yeah, Donovan is over-rated. He had the potential to be a superstar after the 2002 World Cup, but he decided to play down to his competition in the MLS rather than give Europe a serious chance. Very good player, but he could have been much better. __________________________________________________ http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZGIz9zSEKKc |

I might be getting out of topic, but talking about the USMNT, I dont think we need a new coach. Bradley just needs to have a wider range in his search for
the squad. The dilema that he has is to either choose players that are paying well in the MLS but dont have any international experience or players that are in
europe but mostly sit in the bench. He goes for the latter and its obvously not working all too well. Bradley has to stop depending on the same core of players
and start developing the younger future members - like Pontius.

NZ got a point, playing to a scoreless draw v. Iraq. I think it's not complete pie in the sky to think that they could win their playoff against
Bahrain/Saudi Arabia, provided they play the way they did against Iraq. I didn't watch the game, but it sounds like the Kiwis controlled play, though
anything would be an improvement over their previous games. Seems they played with a bit more fire - they committed quite a few fouls, and had a couple of
yellows, but didn't get anyone sent off. Anyway, at least NZ picked up a point. Now let's see if the USMNT can match that...
