I listened to Bob in Paradise for the first time in years tonight. The fact that they promoted it on the official site probably helped. If they did that
more, I'd probably remember to listen in if I could.
Vom Steeg was the featured guest. Here are some of the highlights:
Obviously he couldn't comment specifically on the recruits, but Tim said we had a huge week last week and went 4/4 in getting coveted players to fill key pieces of the puzzle.
Tim compared his team to the UNLV basketball teams of the 80s and 90s. He said everywhere they go, they're a big deal in the conference. In 6 of our road games this year, the school attendance record was set.
We already knew this, but Tim said we're playing Indiana at home next year. It will be the first week of October with the students back and should be on FSC. Tim really wants to sell out Harder for it.
One of the first question Bob asked him was what the most difficult part of this year was. Tim said that it was beginning a season knowing that he didn't have the pieces to be a championship team. The coaches gave it their all, but knew that losing Andy and then Kyle and CJ going down meant they were too weak in the back to win a national title. They talked about Tim getting into the Junior College Coaches Hall of Fame, and Steve Wendt said that he could some day be in the actual Soccer Hall. In response, Tim said that he doesn't want to make any bold predictions, but the next two years will be special.
Tim and Bob had a frank discussion about the Big West. Bob kept referring to the "Curse of the Big West." He was implying that the BW can produce very good teams once in a while, but by and large the conference doesn't take sports seriously enough and drops down the rest of the conference. Tim said that he's very blunt in meeting with other coaches in the BW about steps they need to do to raise the levels of their programs. Bob really sung the praises of what the conference did this year getting 4 teams in and being ranked the 3rd best conference, but Tim said a lot of schools have a long way to go. He seemed to be implying that the facilities and gameday infrastructure and most schools was subpar compared to the bigger schools we play at.
Bob asked him what further he'd like to see done to Harder. He mentioned a lot of things from a new scoreboard with a digital screen to enhancing the aesthetics of the stadium. He still thinks we can host a Final 4 down the road.
Tim said how his manner of coaching has changed a lot because of the different type of athletes he has now. It's a much more professional environment where results matter more and players are more serious about the sport as their career.
Steve asked Tim if he ever dreamed that we would draw the types of crowds that we do. Tim said he wasn't quite sure, but he knew there was potential from the crowds the women got in the 80s.
Bob's first guest was Jordan Wiener. They shot the sh!t for a while talking about being a walkon and road trips, but there wasn't really any news. You can tell Bob really emphasizes weight training with his players. He said Somogyi is really starting to buy into and enjoy hitting the weights and getting bigger.
One thing I didn't know about that I think most of you guys will love to know is that you can email questions in for Bob to answer on the show. Today's question had to do with Somogyi. I was disapointed to hear that Greg won't be going to a big man camp this summer. They hope to get him to camps later in his career, but they made an agreement with his family that he would go to Hungary for the summer and play with the national team there.
